What Really Makes a Place Feel Like Home?

Labor Day has always been a signal of a change in seasons, from summer to fall. Here in Austin, you’d think it was still summer if you didn’t see it on the calendar!

Despite the temperature, it’s also the start of football season. I attended a Friday night high school football game recently for the first time in years, and it brought back a lifetime of memories, starting in elementary school. The football stadium was the place to be on a Friday night, even at that age, although we rarely watched the game. It was all about meeting my friends and socializing.

Years later, when I was a band mom, meeting my friends and socializing was almost as important as watching my kids march at halftime.

This time, I was there as a member of the North Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce, helping with concessions. As I sold bags of popcorn, I watched the crowd swirling around our table—moms, dads, grandparents, and kids of all ages. The middle-schoolers couldn’t have cared less about the game. They were milling around the grassy area, chatting and laughing, just like my friends and I did at that age.

The game brought us all together as a community.

And really, isn’t that a big part of what makes a place feel like home? Real estate is about the house, of course, but it’s also about what’s outside the front door—the people, traditions, events, and connections that create a sense of belonging. Those are the things you can’t always see in a listing, but they can make all the difference in how you feel about where you live.

September also marks the beginning of festival season. Besides selling popcorn, I was there to help promote the upcoming Lucky Ducky Rubber Duck Derby fundraiser, which will be held on Lake Travis during the JTown Street Fair on September 26. The event will benefit the Chamber as well as local nonprofits—another great example of our community coming together.
